What is The Most Popular City for Project Management in 2017?

By Josh Spilker

At Workzone, we have customers and users all over the country in almost every industry imaginable. But it got us thinking–what is the most overall popular city for project management?

Some suspects immediately came to mind–San Francisco, The Research Triangle in North Carolina and Austin maybe?

But when we asked Google Trends where the most popular places for the search term “project management”, we got a few right–but not as our top guesses.

Yes, there is San Francisco…but Lafayette, Indiana anyone?

The top five were:

  • Lafayette, IN
  • Washington, DC
  • Baltimore, MD
  • San Francisco, CA
  • San Diego, CA

The results are based on searches for the term “project management” from June 2016 to June 2017 and are listed by metro areas.

Now, granted, this list could be places where people are most interested in project management without actually doing project management. The places that already know how to do project management may not be searching for it. But the list is still quite illuminating for the people and places that are the hubs of project management.

Some of the top cities also were top educational towns that housed major universities: like Purdue University in Lafayette; the University of Illinois in Champaign and Michigan State near Lansing.

Note: We ran this data for the same dates (6/18/16 to 6/18/17) on different times after those dates and noticed minor fluctuation. This listing is accurate for when we published, even though some of the cities may have changed slightly in their rankings. Why metro areas? The Workzone team felt like this was more representative of where project management was searched and studied, rather than just the city names.
