Building a stronger business is a difficult task, and it’s especially tough because it’s a goal that’s abstract and seemingly far off. It can feel much simpler to focus on more attainable goals, with more immediate benefits.

Yet in the long term, it behooves business owners to put their energy and resources into a company’s future by building a stronger business model, not just increasing day-to-day performance but constructing a strong foundation for those who rely on your company for commercial and personal success.

1.) Contextualize your model — Far too many businesses have failed simply because its leaders tried to transplant a rigid model into a wildly different set of circumstances. Instead, you need to build a business model that’s custom-tailored to your industry and the makeup of your customer base.

2.) Build a foundation — Once you’ve analyzed the market state, you need to lay the groundwork for the further growth and evolution of your company. Whether you focus on cloud-based project management software or collaboration software, you need to utilize the technology at your disposal to formulate concrete plans for where to take your business.

3.) Target the future — Don’t build for next week or next year or even the next decade. Instead, build of your plans with the vision to leave your business on solid ground for the next generation.

4.) Build a culture — You don’t just want your business to be in a good spot financially; you want it to have the necessary elements in place to continue growing and innovating. Cloud-based project management services like Basecamp or Workzone with their integrated online document management features can help you spread your vision and values to your people. MS Project and programs of its ilk can’t help you there.

5.) Be specific — Set goals. Set measurable goals whose results you can pore over in order to tweak your approaches. Abstract goals don’t do anybody any good. A business with a healthy, specific vision is far stronger than one without.

6.) Reinvent everything — Whether it’s as simple as upgrading from aging applications like MS Project or more in-depth than that, constantly reinventing your processes and workflows is the only way you will be able to keep pace with the rapidly evolving modern market.
